1. Make sure the cabinet plan matches the room
Final measurements should reflect the actual finished space. Check wall lengths, ceiling height, windows, doors, bulkheads and anything that projects into the cabinet run. Do not rely only on an old builder plan or measurements taken before demolition if the room has changed.
2. Confirm appliance dimensions, not just nominal sizes
A “36-inch refrigerator” description does not replace the manufacturer dimensions. Width, height, depth, door swing, required clearances and ventilation can affect adjacent cabinets and panels. The same principle applies to ranges, dishwashers, microwaves and hood units.
3. Know where fillers are required
Fillers are not automatically wasted space. They can provide door/drawer clearance beside walls, accommodate out-of-square conditions and allow the installer to create a clean finished run. Removing a planned filler to gain a few inches can cause interference elsewhere.
4. Identify every exposed end
Ask which cabinet sides will be visible after installation. Finished end panels, dishwasher panels, refrigerator panels and island/peninsula backs should be shown in the plan and included in the material list where required.
5. Check the walls and floor
Cabinets are rigid; houses are not always perfectly square, level or plumb. Large humps, damaged drywall or severe floor variation should be identified before installation. The installer can make normal adjustments, but major substrate problems may require additional work.
6. Coordinate plumbing and electrical
The sink, dishwasher, range, hood and other equipment need services in workable locations. Confirm trade responsibilities before cabinet installation so a cabinet does not arrive only to discover that plumbing or electrical must be moved through it unexpectedly.
7. Decide the flooring sequence
Different projects use different flooring sequences. What matters is that finished floor heights, appliance openings, toe kicks and transitions are considered before cabinets are permanently installed.
8. Protect the countertop schedule
Quartz templating generally happens after the base cabinets are installed and their final positions are confirmed. If a base cabinet, island or panel is missing or moving, templating may need to wait.
9. Confirm what “installation” includes
Ask whether the quote includes cabinet assembly, hanging/levelling, fillers, panels, toe kicks, handles, crown/trim, appliance panels, removal of packaging and disposal of old cabinetry. An installation price is only meaningful when its scope is clear.
10. Plan delivery and access
Clear a safe route from the delivery point to the kitchen and confirm where cabinets can be staged without blocking trades. Inspect delivered items against the cabinet list so missing or damaged pieces can be identified early.
